HELPFUL TERMS

PRINT & BOOK AWARENESS

understand the purpose of print; books are held right-side up, read left-to-right; front cover, back cover; etc.

ALPHABETIC KNOWLEDGE

know letter names, shapes, and sounds

PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS

can 'play' with words, word parts, syllables, onsets, & rimes (hint: syllables with the same rime rhyme)

PHONEMIC AWARENESS

aware of the individual phonemes in the spoken language; the ability to manipulate sounds; falls under the phonological awareness umbrella

HIGH FREQUENCY WORDS

words that frequently appear in print, includes sight words (words that should be memorized by sight)
